IPELEGENG · JABAVU, SOWETO

A community place with a history.

Ipelegeng Community Centre is connected with Bishop David Nkwe’s commitment to education, support, community organising and opportunity.

THE LEGACY

A place where people could gather.

The centre’s documented history includes literacy, youth activities, social work and self-help initiatives. It also appears in records of apartheid-era civic activity and repression.

DMNF’s longer-term aim is to help preserve that history and explore community-informed possibilities for the future.

IN THE RECORD

Key documented moments.

1972

A 2008 Sowetan tribute records early fundraising and building by Bishop Nkwe. The precise establishment date remains unconfirmed.

1985

Episcopal News Service documented literacy, job placement, youth and family services at the centre.

1986–87

Contemporary reporting and a later TRC decision document an attack and arson at the Ipelegeng complex.

2006

Reporting described a proposal for a Miracle Theatre. This does not establish the centre’s current facilities.

LOOKING AHEAD

A community-led future.

Education, practical skills, enterprise, arts, storytelling and preservation are possible directions for discussion. No funded restoration programme is being claimed here. Research, consultation and partnership would be needed.
